In Stage 1, (usually at a very young age), you just want to catch a fish, ANY fish will do! Stage 2 finds you wanting to catch a LOT of fish (competition!) Stage 3 directs you to catch a BIG fish and finally (with maturity and having satisfied the other stages) catching a fish the hardest way possible (like, fly fishing). I would add Stage 5 and that would be fishing for the simple joy of being in and with the river.
